Whatever curriculum you select, you are always in control of it. In some cases, you might have to slow down and just stick to a certain skill for a while. Other times, your kid might grasp a concept so quickly that you do not even have enough time to access the math manipulatives. Regardless of when it is, you are in charge of how fast or slow the curriculum goes. The key to designing a curriculum that is right for you and your children is to understand that each has its own pace. Some kids will breeze through all their math classes like a breeze while others really struggle. Homeschoolers who think they can homeschool all the classes are in for a rude awakening when they get to college. By understanding each individual student, you can design an after school math and reading enrichment program that will work for them. For example, if your child blinks in the classroom, this is not a sign that they will take the concept very well. This is usually a sign that they need more help in mastering the concept. Homeschoolers also need a curriculum that works within their time frame. If you feel like the lesson is moving too quickly, make adjustments until you get to the point that they can follow it. A homeschooling math curriculum mastery-based approach is best for these students. There is another factor in a math curriculum-your child. You want to be sure you are using lessons that they are going to learn to the best of their ability. Homeschooling math programs can be a little harder because there is no teacher's guide to follow. They are on their own. I recommend looking at various math programs based on how they compare with the standards set by the National Association for Mathematics Education (NALA). Homeschool math programs that are in line with the curriculum standards of the NALA and the National Association for Mathematics Teaching (NASM) will be much better for your children than the cookie-cutter math programs you may be looking at. One thing I always recommend when working with my children and students is to look for hands-on manipulatives such as the grade 5 math curriculum Ontario. The best way to get started is to use Ontario math books and DVDs. These types of books are interactive and teach various concepts such as objects, relationships, and ideas. If your child likes singing songs, then they may feel like it is easy to do math problems using sing songs. In fact, they may feel like they are "learning" the math! After you have selected the ideal Singapore math curriculum for your child, try to find resources that allow you to take your children to class with you. That way, you have a teacher who has the time to teach the class not just you. This will give you a little more time with your children and at the same time help you make sure they are getting individualized attention. Once you find math curricula that work, your kids will be very happy and you will not feel like you have made many sacrifices!
